"A buyer is a buyer is a buyer."
— Dan Kennedy, No B.S. Direct Marketing
The moment someone signs a contract with you, they are in a buying state. They just made a decision, they trust you, they're excited about the results, and their wallet is already open. This is the single best moment to offer more value.
Three principles that make this work:
1. Maximum Buy-In
Right after someone says yes to your ad management, they've already overcome all their objections. They trust you. They believe in the outcome. Offering the next logical thing meets almost zero resistance.
2. Your Best Customer Is Your Existing Customer
It costs 5-7x more to acquire a new client than to sell more to one you already have. Every client you close for $1,500 could be a $3,500 client if you just offer the right add-on at the right time.
3. The Next Logical Offer
The upsell has to make sense. "I'm running your ads. Now let me make sure the leads actually get followed up." That's not a random pitch. That's the obvious next step. The client is thinking it before you even say it.
💡 Two moments to upsell: (1) Right when they sign the contract — "Most of my clients also add lead follow-up so they don't lose leads. Want me to include that?" (2) 30-60 days in when you've proven results — "We're getting you 40 leads/month but your team is only calling back 60%. Let me fix that."
Use this right after the client signs the ad management contract. While they're still on the call or in the same conversation.
Awesome, so we're locked in on the ad management. Before we wrap up, I want to mention something real quick. The ads are going to bring leads in. That part I'm confident in. But the #1 thing I see kill results for businesses like yours is slow follow-up. A lead fills out the form, and if nobody calls or texts them back within 5 minutes, the chance of booking them drops by like 80%. What I do for most of my clients is set up an automated follow-up system alongside the ads. The second someone fills out your form, they get a text within 60 seconds. Something like "Hey [name], thanks for reaching out, when's a good time to chat?" Then if they don't respond, it follows up automatically at 24 hours and 72 hours. It runs completely on autopilot. Your team doesn't have to change anything they're doing. It just makes sure no lead falls through the cracks. It's an additional $[500-800]/mo on top of the ad management. Most clients see about 20-30% more booked appointments just from the faster follow-up alone. Want me to include that in the setup? I can have it running by the time the first ads go live.
⚠️ Don't be pushy. If they say no, that's fine. Say "No problem, it's always there if you want to add it later." You'll have another chance at 30-60 days when you can show them real data on how many leads aren't getting called back.
Same number of clients. Double the revenue. The automations take less ongoing work than ad management because they literally run themselves.
Without Upsells
$7,500/mo
5 clients × $1,500/mo
With Upsells
$15,000/mo
5 clients × $3,000/mo avg
Pick 1-2 that make sense for each client. You don't need to sell all of these.
Lead Follow-Up Automation
$500 – $800/mo
The biggest problem with local businesses: leads come in and they take forever to respond. Or they never respond. Automated text/email sequences hit the lead within 60 seconds.
Email Sequences
$500 – $1,000/mo
Most local businesses have zero email marketing. Even a basic welcome sequence and monthly newsletter puts them ahead of 90% of competitors.
Review Generation System
$300 – $500/mo
After someone visits, automatically send them a text asking for a Google review. More reviews = higher Google ranking = more free traffic.
Chatbot / AI Receptionist
$500 – $1,000/mo
A chatbot on their website or Facebook page that answers common questions, books appointments, and captures lead info 24/7.
Weekly Reporting Dashboard
$300 – $500/mo
Instead of texting "ads are going well," give them a clean dashboard. Makes you look professional and kills "how are my ads doing?" messages.
Keep it simple. Bundle 1-2 automations with ad management.
|
Basic $1,500 per month
|
Growth $2,500 per month
|
Premium $3,500–4K per month
|
💡 Your cost to run these automations: $50-100/mo in tool costs. The rest is profit. And most of it runs on autopilot once you set it up.
💡 Don't pitch upsells on the first call. Wait until you've delivered results with their ads. Usually 30-60 days in. Let the ad performance speak first.
The perfect moment is when they say something like:
Listen for these triggers:
"We're getting leads but my front desk isn't following up fast enough"
"I wish we had more Google reviews"
"Do you know anything about email marketing?"
"People keep asking questions on our Facebook page at midnight"
You're solving a problem they just told you about. That's not a pitch — that's a solution.
For when you want to formally present the upsell. Works on a call or in a message. Adjust the numbers based on what you're actually seeing.
Hey [client name], so your ads are doing well. We're averaging [X leads] at [$X per lead] which is solid. But I've noticed something. About [30-40%] of your leads aren't getting a response in the first hour. Industry data shows that leads contacted within 5 minutes are 21x more likely to convert than leads contacted after 30 minutes. I can set up an automated follow-up system that: - Texts every new lead within 60 seconds - Sends a confirmation email with your offer - Follows up automatically if they don't respond - Books them straight into your calendar It runs on autopilot. Your team doesn't need to do anything differently. I set this up for my other [niche] clients and they typically see [20-40% more booked appointments] from the same ad spend. It's an additional $[X]/mo on top of what we're doing now. Want me to set it up this week?
⚠️ Don't lie about numbers. Use real data if you have it. If you don't, say "industry benchmarks show..." instead of making up client results.
You don't need to be a developer. Here's what handles the heavy lifting:
Setup time: 2-4 hours per client. After that it runs itself. Check in once a week to make sure nothing broke. Use Claude Code to write the email copy, text sequences, and chatbot scripts.
🛑 Don't pitch upsells before delivering ad results. You need to earn trust first. If you pitch automations on day one, you look like you're just trying to charge more. Wait 30-60 days.
🛑 Don't oversell the complexity. "I'll build you an AI-powered omnichannel automation suite" sounds scary. "I'll set up a system that texts every new lead within 60 seconds" sounds like exactly what they need.
⚠️ Don't set and forget. Check automations weekly. A broken follow-up sequence means leads are falling through the cracks — and that's your reputation on the line.
