Lesson 3.4 was about setting up YOUR Business Manager. This lesson is about what your CLIENT needs to do so you can actually manage their ads. Most clients have never touched Business Manager before, so you'll probably walk them through it.

✅ 1. What You Already Did (Quick Recap)

You should already have all of this from lesson 3.4. If not, go back and finish it first.

  • Your own Business Manager created at business.facebook.com
  • Your own ad account created inside your BM
  • Business verification submitted
  • Payment method added to YOUR ad account (for testing/learning)

🛑 Haven't done lesson 3.4 yet? Stop here and go back. You need your own Business Manager set up before you can receive client access. Go to Lesson 3.4 →

🎯 2. Three Situations You'll Run Into

Every client is different. Here's what you'll see:

🅰 Client Has Nothing Set Up (Most Common)

Small business owner, never heard of Business Manager. You walk them through the entire setup. This is what we cover in Section 3 below.

🅱 Client Already Has BM + Ad Account

They've run ads before or had another agency. Skip Section 3 and go straight to Section 4 (how they invite you).

🅲 Client Has a Facebook Page But No Business Manager

They post on their business page but never ran ads through Business Manager. Create the BM first, then claim their existing page inside it.

💡 Most clients will be Scenario A. Small business owners don't know what Business Manager is. That's normal. Offer to do it together on a Zoom call or record a Loom video walking them through it.

🏗️ 3. Setting Up the Client's Side (Scenario A)

Walk your client through these steps. Either share your screen on a Zoom, send them a Loom, or do it for them if they give you login access (get written permission first).

Client Creates Their Business Manager

business.facebook.com → Create Account

They fill in:

  • Business name: Their actual business name (e.g. "Tony's Pizza")
  • Your name: Their real full name
  • Business email: Their business email

Click Submit. Meta sends a verification email. They need to open it and confirm.

Client Creates an Ad Account

Business Settings → Accounts → Ad Accounts → Add → Create New
  • Account name: Their business name
  • Time zone: Match their location. If they're in New York, pick Eastern Time. This affects when daily budgets reset.
  • Currency: USD (or whatever currency they operate in)

🛑 Currency CANNOT be changed after creation. Double check this with the client before they click Create. If they pick the wrong currency, they have to create a whole new ad account.

Client Adds Their Payment Method

Business Settings → Payment Methods → Add Payment Method

The client enters THEIR credit card or debit card. This is what pays for the ad spend.

⚠️ Their card, not yours. You manage the ads. They pay the ad spend. Your management fee is charged separately (via Stripe, invoice, etc). Never put your own card on a client's ad account unless you have a very specific reason and trust them completely.

🤝 4. How the Client Gives You Access

This is the most important part. The client needs to invite you to their Business Manager so their ad account and page show up in YOUR dashboard.

What the Client Does:

Open Business Settings

business.facebook.com → Settings ⚙️ (bottom left)

The gear icon is in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Go to People

Settings → People (left sidebar)

This is where they manage who has access to their business assets.

Add You as a Person

People → Add People (blue button)

They type in YOUR business email (the one connected to your Business Manager).

Give You Full Control

After entering your email, they select what access to give you:

  • Ad Account → Toggle ON → Select their ad account → Full Control
  • Page → Toggle ON → Select their Facebook page → Full Control

Click Send Invitation.

💡 Always ask for Full Control. If they only give you partial access, you might not be able to create campaigns, edit audiences, or adjust budgets. Full Control means you can do your job without asking them to click buttons for you.

What YOU Do After:

Accept the Invitation

Your business.facebook.com → Notifications / Settings → Requests

You'll get an email from Meta. Log into YOUR Business Manager, find the invitation, and accept it.

Once accepted, their ad account and Facebook page will show up inside your Business Manager dashboard. You manage everything from your side. They don't need to do anything else.

📋 5. Message to Send Your Client

Copy this message and send it to your client. Replace the brackets with your info.

Hey [name], to get started I need access to your Meta ad account and Facebook page. Here's what to do:

1. Go to business.facebook.com and log in
2. Click Settings (gear icon, bottom left)
3. Click People → Add People
4. Type in my email: [your email]
5. Give me Full Control on your ad account and your page
6. Hit send

That's it! Once I accept on my end we're good to go. Let me know if you need help with any of the steps.

💡 Pro tip: If your client is not tech-savvy, offer to hop on a quick Zoom and walk them through it. Takes 5 minutes and saves you a week of back-and-forth messages.

❓ 6. Questions Your Client Will Ask

Have these answers ready. You'll hear them on every single onboarding call.

"Do you need my Facebook password?"

No. They invite you through Business Manager. You never need their password. Ever.

"Can you see my personal Facebook?"

No. Business Manager is completely separate from their personal profile. You can only see their business page and ad account.

"Who pays for the ads?"

Their credit card is on their ad account. They pay the ad spend directly to Meta. Your management fee is separate.

"What if I already boost posts from my page?"

Boosting is different from running ads through Business Manager. We set up proper campaigns through the ad account, which gives way more control over targeting, budgets, and optimization.
